Senator Brian Schatz Blocks Trump’s Diplomatic Nominees Over USAID Closure Plans

WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz announced on Monday that he would block Senate votes on President Donald Trump’s diplomatic nominees in protest against the administration’s move to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and merge it into the State Department.

Under Senate rules, a single senator can delay nominations, even if all 99 others support moving forward, forcing lengthy procedural hurdles to advance appointments. Schatz’s decision is expected to slow down the confirmation process for key diplomatic positions.

President Trump has tasked billionaire Elon Musk with identifying and cutting wasteful government spending, a role that has placed him at the forefront of efforts to dismantle USAID. In the process, Musk has made increasingly harsh and unfounded allegations against the agency, further intensifying the controversy.
