Food Assistance Increase: Texas SNAP Recipients to Get More Money Soon

0

If you rely on SNAP benefits in Texas, you’re about to get some good news. Starting October 1, 2024, food assistance benefits will increase to help families keep up with the rising cost of groceries. This change is part of the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), which helps make sure SNAP benefits match inflation.

So, how much more will you get, who qualifies, and when will the changes take effect? Let’s break it down.

Why Are SNAP Benefits Increasing?

Every year, the government adjusts SNAP benefits to help low-income families afford basic necessities like food, rent, and utilities. The Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is meant to keep up with inflation, ensuring that people who rely on SNAP aren’t left struggling as prices go up.

For 2025, the higher benefit amounts will take effect October 1, 2024, and last through September 30, 2025.

How Much More Will You Get?

The amount you receive depends on your income, household size, and expenses, but here are some of the key changes:

  • Higher Maximum SNAP Benefits

    • A family of four can now receive up to $975 per month, an increase from last year.
    • Single-person and larger households will also see increases.
  • Increased Standard Deductions

    • If you have one to three people in your household, your monthly deduction will rise to $204.
    • This means more people may qualify for SNAP or get higher benefits.
  • More Help for Rent and Utility Costs

    • The shelter deduction cap is going up to $712, which helps people who spend a large part of their income on rent and utilities get more food assistance.
  • Higher Asset Limits

    • If you have cash savings, the limit is now $3,000 for most households.
    • If you’re over 60 or have a disability, you can now have up to $4,500 in savings and still qualify for SNAP.

When Will You Get the Extra Money?

If you already receive SNAP benefits, the increase will automatically show up in your account starting in October 2024.

If you aren’t currently receiving SNAP but think you might qualify, now is the time to apply. You can check your eligibility and submit an application through Texas Health and Human Services.
