IRS Distributes $2.4 Billion in Unclaimed Stimulus—Check If You’re Getting $1,400
If you missed out on a previous stimulus check, you might be in for a surprise payment this January. The IRS is sending out special payments of up to $1,400 per person, and for families, the total could be even higher.
Who’s Eligible?
This round of payments is for taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return but didn’t claim the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC). If you left that section blank or mistakenly entered “$0,” you might still be eligible.
To qualify, you must have:
- Filed a 2021 tax return
- Missed out on one or more stimulus payments from 2020 or 2021
- Not claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit
If you meet these requirements, there’s a good chance you’re on the payment list.

How Much Will You Receive?
The IRS is sending up to $1,400 per eligible person. That means:
- A single person could receive $1,400
- A married couple could receive $2,800
- A family of four could receive $5,600
When Will Payments Arrive?
The IRS started sending payments in December 2024, and most people will receive their money by late January 2025. The payment will arrive the same way your tax refund does—either by direct deposit or paper check.
What If You Didn’t File a 2021 Tax Return?
You still have time to claim your payment. If you never filed a return for 2021, you must do so by April 15, 2025, to receive your stimulus money. Even if you had little or no income, filing could make you eligible.
How to Check If You’re Getting Paid
To find out if you’re on the list, you can:
- Check your IRS tax transcript online
- Look for an IRS letter in the mail
- Call the IRS helpline for assistance
If you qualify, the money will be sent automatically. You don’t need to take any extra steps.
