Millions Could Get $2,400 or $550—Find Out If You Qualify

There’s been a lot of buzz about $2,400 and $550 checks hitting bank accounts in 2025. But is the government really sending out new payments? The short answer: No, there’s no new federal stimulus check. However, there are still ways people could receive these amounts through Social Security, tax credits, and state programs.

Here’s what’s really happening—and whether you qualify for extra money.

Who Could Get the $2,400 Payment?

While the federal government isn’t handing out a new $2,400 stimulus check, some people could still receive this amount through existing programs:

  • Social Security Recipients – If you receive Social Security retirement or disability (SSDI), your monthly check could be around $2,400, depending on your earnings history. The 3.2% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) means beneficiaries are getting slightly larger checks this year.

  • IRS Recovery Rebate Payments – Around 1 million Americans are getting up to $1,400 in unclaimed stimulus funds from the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. If you missed your payment, the IRS may send you a check automatically.

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) – If you’re a low- to moderate-income worker, filing your taxes could get you a refund boost of up to $7,830. That’s extra money straight into your pocket.

What About the $550 Payment?

Unlike Social Security and IRS payments, the $550 check isn’t coming from the federal government. Instead, some states and local programs are offering relief payments around this amount.

  • State Stimulus & Rebate Payments – Some states still have leftover relief money and are issuing one-time rebates or ongoing payments. For example, in Sacramento, California, eligible families are receiving $725 per month for a year as part of a guaranteed income program.

  • Tax Refund Boosts – If you qualify for certain state-level tax credits, you could get an extra $500-$600 in your refund.

When Are These Payments Coming?

  • Social Security Payments – Sent out on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Wednesday of each month, based on your birthdate.
  • IRS Recovery Rebate Payments – Being sent automatically through early 2025.
  • State Stimulus & Rebate ChecksVaries by state, so check with your state’s tax or treasury department for details.
