Social Security Shake-Up: Are You One of the Millions Getting a Pay Raise?
If you’re a retired teacher, firefighter, police officer, or public employee, you might finally be getting the Social Security benefits you deserve. A new law, called the Social Security Fairness Act, was signed by President Biden on January 5, 2025—and it’s bringing big increases to monthly checks for millions of Americans.
For years, unfair rules known as the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) have reduced Social Security benefits for public employees who also receive a pension. But now, with this new law in place, those cuts are gone.
How Much More Money Will You Get?
The short answer? It depends on your situation—but for many people, it’s a game-changer. Here’s what the average increases look like:
- Retired public workers will see an extra $360 per month on average.
- Spouses receiving Social Security benefits could see a $700 monthly increase.
- Widows and widowers could see the biggest boost, with an increase of about $1,190 per month.
For some retirees, this could mean thousands of extra dollars every year.

When Will the Money Start Rolling In?
Here’s the catch: It won’t happen overnight.
Even though the law takes effect for benefits starting January 2024, the Social Security Administration (SSA) needs time to adjust payments for millions of people. Some retirees could see increases as soon as this summer, but for others, it may take until early 2026 for everything to be fully processed.
If you qualify, the SSA will automatically adjust your payments—and if you’re owed back pay for previous months, you’ll receive that as well.
What Should You Do Right Now?
If you think you’re eligible for a bigger check, here’s what to do:
- Make sure your information is up to date – Check your mailing address and direct deposit details with the SSA.
- Stay informed – The SSA will post updates online as payments roll out. Keep an eye on their website or your online account.
- Be patient – With millions of people affected, it may take time, but the increase is coming.
Will This Affect Your Other Benefits?
No! The extra Social Security money won’t impact other federal benefits like:
- Social Security Disability (SSDI)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- SNAP (food stamps)
- Medicaid
- Housing assistance
What If Your Payment Doesn’t Go Up?
If you believe you qualify but don’t see a change in your benefits by the end of 2025, you can:
- Log in to your SSA account to check your payment status.
- Call Social Security to make sure they have the right information.
- Request a payment trace if the SSA says they sent money but you never got it.
