1,705 Pounds of Marijuana Seized in Arkansas Traffic Stop; Two Arrested

VAN BUREN, Ark. – Arkansas State Police (ASP) made a major drug bust on Thursday, February 20, 2025, after stopping a 2018 tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 in Crawford County for a traffic violation. The stop, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. near the 2-mile mark, led to the discovery of 1,705 pounds of illegal marijuana hidden inside 42 boxes and a large duffel bag.

Traffic Stop Leads to Major Drug Seizure

During the routine traffic stop, troopers conducted a search of the trailer and found a massive haul of marijuana. The illegal substance was carefully concealed, indicating an attempt to transport it across state lines. The discovery led to the immediate arrest of the truck’s occupants.

Suspects Arrested and Charged

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Dawit Asefa, 48, of Silver Spring, Maryland, and his passenger, Ashenafi Mamo, 39, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, were taken into custody on the spot. Both men were transported to the Crawford County Detention Center and now face serious felony charges, including:
• Trafficking a Controlled Substance
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the origin or intended destination of the drugs.
