California Man Pleads Guilty to Deadly 2023 Rampage That Left 15-Year-Old Dead, Several Injured
A California man with a disturbing “admiration for mass murderers” has confessed to a violent rampage that left a 15-year-old boy dead and several others seriously injured in April 2023. Prosecutors say the attack was fueled by “personal frustrations” and ended with numerous victims in the hospital.
Austin Eis, 26, pleaded guilty last week to nearly a dozen felony charges related to his hours-long crime spree in Ventura County. The charges stem from a series of violent incidents, including a brutal assault on a Walmart employee and a horrifying attack on students outside his former high school, Westlake High School in Westlake Village.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, Eis began his rampage by stabbing and pepper-spraying a Walmart greeter. Shortly after, he deliberately drove his car into a group of students waiting on a sidewalk, aiming to create a mass casualty event. Among those struck was 15-year-old Wesley Welling, who tragically lost his life. Three other students suffered severe injuries that required surgeries and extensive medical treatment.
Authorities say Eis’ actions were intentional and motivated by deep personal grievances. His guilty plea marks a significant step in bringing justice to the victims and their families. The case has reignited conversations about mental health, security in public spaces, and the importance of addressing violent tendencies before they escalate into tragedy.
Eis is now awaiting sentencing, where he faces the possibility of life in prison. Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the loss of Wesley Welling and hopes for a full recovery for the other injured victims.
