A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl in Fort Lauderdale earlier this month, authorities confirmed. The tragic incident, which occurred on February 17, claimed the life of Tanaejah Atterbury and left the community shaken.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the suspect faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Investigators revealed that the shooting took place on Northwest 8th Avenue, where multiple individuals were reportedly involved in two separate altercations. Witnesses and Atterbury’s family stated that tensions escalated, leading to one individual pulling out a gun and opening fire.

Police released 911 calls on Tuesday that captured the panic and distress in the moments following the shooting. Frantic voices could be heard pleading for help as the situation unfolded.

“Oh my God, oh my God! I need an ambulance on 8th Avenue, please,” one caller frantically told dispatchers. “There was a fight that broke out, and somebody got shot.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the suspect’s identity due to their age. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather evidence and statements from witnesses.

Atterbury’s family and friends are mourning the sudden loss of the teenager, remembering her as a kind-hearted and vibrant young girl. The community has come together to demand justice for Atterbury as they await further legal proceedings against the suspect.
