Winter Storm Watch Issued: Up to 12 Inches of Snow & 40+ MPH Winds Coming!
Arizona is in for a wild ride as a series of storms prepare to sweep across the state, bringing heavy rain, dangerous winds, and significant snowfall in higher elevations. The National Weather Service has issued multiple warnings, and experts are urging residents to take precautions as conditions could turn hazardous.
Storms Begin Tonight—Here’s What to Expect
The first wave of storms is expected to hit late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, bringing scattered showers across central and southern Arizona. While Phoenix will see only light rainfall, higher elevations—particularly Flagstaff and surrounding areas—could see up to 3 inches of snow overnight. A much stronger system will arrive on Thursday, bringing more intense rain, snow, and dangerously high winds. Winds could gust over 40 mph in northern Arizona, with Phoenix seeing gusts of up to 25 mph. The most intense part of the storm is expected Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, with forecasters warning of heavy snowfall, slick roads, and potential power outages in higher elevations.
Winter Storm Warning Issued—Up to a Foot of Snow Possible!
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas above 6,000 feet, including Flagstaff and parts of northern Arizona. Forecast models suggest that Flagstaff could receive 6 to 12 inches of snow, while areas like Sunrise Park and Arizona Snowbowl may see up to 1.5 feet of accumulation. Travelers are urged to avoid mountain roads during this time, as whiteout conditions and icy roads will make driving extremely hazardous. Strong winds combined with heavy snowfall could bring down trees and power lines, increasing the risk of power outages.

Phoenix & Tucson: Rain, Wind, and Cooler Temperatures
For those in lower elevations, the storm will bring much-needed rain along with cooler temperatures. Phoenix is expected to see up to 0.3 inches of rain, with highs in the mid-60s. Tucson will also see scattered showers, with temperatures dipping into the low 50s by Friday. By Saturday, a third system could bring additional showers and light snow to northern Arizona, though the intensity is expected to be lower than the previous storms.
How to Stay Safe During the Storm
- Secure Outdoor Items – Strong winds could knock down patio furniture, decorations, and other loose objects.
- Avoid Traveling in Snowy Areas – Roads will be slick and dangerous, especially in mountain regions.
- Prepare for Power Outages – Have extra flashlights, batteries, and emergency supplies on hand.
- Stay Informed – Check for weather updates and warnings regularly.
When Will It Be Over?
The worst of the storm is expected to pass by Sunday, bringing clearer skies and a slight warm-up. However, chilly temperatures will linger, with highs in the 50s and 60s through early next week. With heavy rain, snowfall, and strong winds on the way, Arizona residents should prepare now. Don’t underestimate these storms—they could be the strongest of the season!
