Shocking Details Revealed About Deadly Fire in Brownsville—Was It Murder or an Accident?

23

A 61-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a tragic house fire in Brownsville that claimed the lives of two people last year. The fire, which took place in September 2024, has now led to murder and arson charges against the suspect.

The Deadly Fire

On the morning of September 27, 2024, firefighters responded to a residential fire at a home near Northwest 19th Avenue and Northwest 53rd Street. When they arrived, they found the house fully engulfed in flames. Sadly, two people inside the home, a man and a woman, were found unresponsive. Both were rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Investigation Reveals Suspicious Details

Initially, investigators treated the fire as an accidental blaze. However, as the investigation progressed, evidence pointed to the fire being deliberately set. Arson experts discovered multiple points of origin inside the house, suggesting that the fire had been intentionally started. The fire seemed to be concentrated in areas leading to the bedrooms, with gasoline found in the hallway and on the suspect’s clothing.

Jorge Marin Calderin, who lived in the house, was questioned by authorities. Calderin had initially claimed that he had been awoken by a smoke detector and tried to put out the fire. However, his story didn’t add up. Further investigation revealed inconsistencies in his account and surveillance footage showed no one entering or leaving the house before the fire broke out.

Arrest and Charges

On March 17, 2025, after a thorough six-month investigation, Calderin was arrested. He now faces charges of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted felony murder, and first-degree arson. He is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Community in Shock

The fire has shaken the Brownsville community, where neighbors have expressed shock over the deaths. Many remember the victims as kind and friendly people who often shared mangoes from their yard. The devastating loss has left the community mourning, and residents are now seeking justice for the victims.

What’s Next?

As the legal process moves forward, Calderin will appear in court for further hearings. Authorities have not yet disclosed a clear motive for the fire, but they are continuing to investigate. The Brownsville community remains hopeful that justice will be served.
