Norm Clarke, the legendary journalist who captivated readers with his “Vegas Confidential” column in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, has passed away at the age of 82. Clarke died at Nathan Adelson Hospice after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of entertainment journalism.

Clarke’s career began in his hometown of Terry, Montana, where he started as a sportswriter for the Terry Tribune in 1963. He soon transitioned to larger outlets, working for newspapers in Helena, Miles City, and Billings, before joining the Associated Press in 1973. There, he gained national attention for his coverage of major events, including the tragic Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in Kentucky in 1977, which claimed the lives of 165 people. His dedication to journalism earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination, setting the stage for his future success.

In 1999, Clarke made a bold move to Las Vegas, where he would go on to become a household name. His “Vegas Confidential” column quickly became a must-read for locals and tourists alike, offering an inside look at the glitz, glamour, and drama of Las Vegas. Clarke’s reporting covered everything from celebrity scandals to the personal lives of stars like Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, and more. His unique style, combined with his eye-catching black eye patch, made him a celebrity in his own right.

Not only did he cover the stories of Vegas, but he also reported on significant events like the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino fire in 1980 and coordinated the Associated Press’ coverage of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. His personal memoir, Power of the Patch, was released shortly before his death, providing readers with an intimate look at his incredible career and personal journey.

Survived by his wife, Cara Roberts Clarke, and his siblings, Clarke’s passing has left a void in the Las Vegas media scene. A memorial service is expected to be scheduled at a later date to honor his contributions to journalism and his impact on the entertainment industry.
