What started as an ordinary evening in downtown Miami quickly turned into a nightmare when a man was stabbed to death outside a local restaurant. The incident happened outside Cacique Restaurant on West Flagler Street, where 59-year-old Wilfredo Clemente Campo Alegre was found bleeding on the sidewalk after what police say was a heated argument over money.
Paramedics rushed Campo Alegre to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but the injuries were too severe. He didn’t make it.
Suspect on the Run – Then Caught
For nearly two weeks, police searched for the suspect, who was caught on surveillance cameras fleeing the scene on a white electric scooter. The footage helped detectives track down Luis Acosta-Barbon, a 59-year-old homeless man, who was found hiding out in the Allapattah neighborhood—miles away from where the stabbing happened.
When officers moved in, Acosta-Barbon was taken into custody without a fight.

What Led to the Stabbing?
Investigators say the two men were arguing before things turned violent. The exact details of the dispute remain unclear, but police believe it was over money.
Surveillance video reportedly shows Acosta-Barbon pulling out a knife before attacking Campo Alegre. As the victim collapsed on the ground, the suspect quickly got on his scooter and took off.
Even when confronted with the video evidence, Acosta-Barbon denied knowing the victim or being involved in the crime.
Facing Justice
Acosta-Barbon is now facing a second-degree murder charge. He’s currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.
Community Concerns: “It’s Not Safe Anymore”
This tragedy has shaken the downtown Miami community, leaving residents and business owners worried about safety in the area.
Adrian Fernandez, who works near the restaurant and knew the victim, said the crime hit close to home.
“He was always around here, you know? It’s scary. You never think something like this will happen to someone you know,” Fernandez said.
Others say downtown Miami has become increasingly dangerous at night. “There are more homeless people, more fights, and more violence. It’s getting worse,” said one local business owner, who asked not to be named.
Now, many are urging city officials to step up security before another tragedy happens.
A Disturbing Pattern of Violence
This isn’t the only violent attack Miami has seen recently. Over the past few months, there have been several stabbings, raising concerns about safety across the city.
-
November 2024 – A man was arrested after stabbing a good Samaritan outside a West Miami-Dade restaurant. The victim was trying to protect a waitress from harassment.
-
December 2024 – A couple was stabbed outside News Cafe in Miami Beach after an argument. The attacker was later arrested.
With more of these crimes making headlines, people are wondering—is Miami getting more dangerous?
What Police Are Doing About It
Miami police say they’re taking action. More officers have been assigned to patrol high-risk areas, and local businesses are being urged to improve security.
A Miami PD spokesperson encouraged residents to stay alert:
“If you see something, say something. We all need to work together to keep our streets safe.”
How to Stay Safe
With crime on the rise, police suggest these safety tips:
-
Avoid confrontations, especially with aggressive individuals.
-
If you see a fight breaking out, call the police instead of stepping in.
-
Stick to well-lit areas and be aware of your surroundings.
-
Join local safety groups or attend neighborhood meetings to stay informed.
What’s Next?
For now, Miami residents are relieved that an arrest has been made in Campo Alegre’s murder. But many believe the city still has a long way to go when it comes to making public spaces safer.
The question remains—what will it take to stop the violence before another life is lost?
