A tragic incident on Martha’s Vineyard has left a community in mourning after a 2-year-old boy passed away following hours of being left unattended in a car. The boy’s babysitter, 41-year-old Aimee Cotton, has been charged with manslaughter, authorities say. The incident took place on March 13, and the child was rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Boston. Sadly, he passed away on Thursday, as confirmed by Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois.

Cotton had already been facing charges of assault and battery on a child and reckless behavior before the boy’s death. At the time of the incident, she was caring for the 2-year-old and a 1-year-old girl. The child, who lived in West Tisbury, had a mother who works as a teacher at Oak Bluffs Elementary School.

Initially, Cotton called 911, claiming the child was not breathing and appeared to be turning blue. She said she had left him in the car for just 15 minutes. However, after reviewing home security footage, police determined that Cotton had actually left the children in the vehicle for nearly three hours. Cotton later admitted that she had left the kids in the car while she cooked bacon and completed other household chores.

“This is a devastating loss,” District Attorney Galibois said, offering his condolences to the family and loved ones of the young boy during this incredibly difficult time.
