Man Murdered Parents as they Slept Because he Thought Mother Stole Money to Rent Motel Room: Cops

A Missouri man is facing two counts of first-degree murder after allegedly killing his parents in their sleep at a Kansas City motel. Authorities say 20-year-old Jason C. Sessoms shot and killed his father, Marvin Sessoms, 42, and his mother, Maleeka Sessoms, 38, after accusing his mother of stealing his money to pay for the motel room. The tragic incident unfolded in the early morning hours of Friday, March 29, at the Extended Stay motel on North Corrington Avenue. Police arrived at the scene around 3:45 a.m. and discovered the couple dead from gunshot wounds.
Investigation and Arrest
Law enforcement quickly identified Jason Sessoms as the primary suspect. Later that same day, he was arrested approximately 600 miles away in Paw Paw, Michigan, on separate charges of home invasion and other unrelated offenses. By Monday, Missouri authorities officially filed murder charges against him. A key witness in the case was Sessoms’ 10-year-old brother, who reportedly told investigators that his older brother was responsible for their parents’ murders. Surveillance footage from the motel parking lot showed both brothers packing up a black Mitsubishi before leaving the scene. However, it remains unclear whether the younger sibling directly witnessed the shooting.

A Family on the Move
According to the probable cause affidavit, the Sessoms family had been traveling to Georgia to visit Marvin Sessoms’ sister. However, they briefly returned to Kansas City to retrieve the youngest son’s laptop. The sister also informed investigators that the family had been trying to leave the area because Jason Sessoms believed someone had “put out a hit on him.” At some point, relatives lost contact with Marvin and Maleeka Sessoms, prompting concern. When Jason answered his mother’s phone but failed to provide clear answers, and his father’s phone was later found in Illinois, family members grew increasingly worried. This led the sister to file a missing persons report, which ultimately led police to the crime scene.
Confession and Legal Proceedings
Initially, Jason Sessoms denied involvement in the murders, claiming that a “tall and buff” Hispanic man was responsible. However, during questioning, he later admitted to the crime. He told investigators that he believed his mother had taken some of his money to pay for their motel stay, which led to the deadly attack. Sessoms is currently being held at the Van Buren County Correctional Facility in Michigan on a $2 million bond as he awaits extradition to Missouri to face murder charges. This tragic case highlights a shocking act of violence within a family, leaving a young child orphaned and relatives searching for answers. As the legal process unfolds, authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the murders, while loved ones mourn the devastating loss of Marvin and Maleeka Sessoms.
