Teens Bragged About Leaving 80-Year-Old Man ‘in Agony’ After Fatal Park Attack: Police

An 80-year-old man, Bhim Kohli, tragically died after being assaulted by a 15-year-old boy while a 13-year-old girl filmed the attack and encouraged it. The assault occurred on September 1, 2023, in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, and Kohli succumbed to his injuries the following day. The two teenagers were convicted of manslaughter after a lengthy trial, sparking outrage from Kohli’s family and the public.
The Violent Attack and Aftermath
On the evening of the attack, Kohli was walking his dog, Rocky, near his home when he was confronted by the two teenagers and three other children. The young boy, who had previously changed into black slider shoes, punched Kohli in the face, kicked him, and racially abused him. The girl filmed the attack, laughing as Kohli, in immense pain, attempted to call for help. Kohli’s injuries included fractured ribs and spinal cord damage caused by a blow to his neck. His family found him shortly after the assault, screaming in pain, and rushed him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Family’s Heartbreak and Anger
Bhim Kohli’s daughter, Susan, spoke emotionally outside the courtroom after the verdict, expressing the family’s profound grief and anger. She recalled finding her father in the park in excruciating pain, unable to comprehend the brutality he had endured. “We never imagined he wouldn’t return home,” she said. “We feel anger and disgust towards the teenagers who took dad away from us. They humiliated an 80-year-old man, assaulted him, filmed it, and laughed at him.” Kohli’s daughter described the horrifying moment she watched the video of the assault, with the loud slap of the slider shoe hitting her father and the girl’s laughter echoing in the background.
Legal Proceedings and Court Ruling
The teenager who physically attacked Kohli was charged with both murder and manslaughter but was acquitted of the more serious murder charge. Both defendants, due to their ages, cannot be named. The boy was remanded in custody, while the girl was granted conditional bail. The sentencing for both is scheduled for May 19 and 20, 2025. Mr. Justice Turner, who oversaw the trial, emphasized that the granting of bail to the girl should not be interpreted as an indication of the sentence she would receive. He also praised the jury for their thorough deliberations, which lasted over six hours. During the trial, the court heard that Kohli, on his way to walk his dog, had encountered the defendants and others in Franklin Park. CCTV footage from the park showed Kohli being followed by the group before the violent assault took place.
A Despicable Act and a Broken Family
The tragic case has left the Kohli family devastated and angry over the senseless attack. They described the attack as “utterly disgusting” and emphasized that their father did not deserve such violence. “Dad did not deserve this, and we wouldn’t wish this pain on anyone else,” his daughter said. As the legal process continues, the Kohli family awaits justice for the horrific actions that took their loved one away.
