Gunman Storms NY State Police Barracks — Shot Dead After Opening Fire

A dramatic and deadly incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when a 69-year-old man armed with a long gun opened fire outside the Saratoga State Police barracks in Malta, New York. State troopers quickly responded, ultimately shooting and killing the suspect after he refused to drop his weapon.

The shooting happened around 1:43 p.m., when troopers inside the SP Saratoga barracks suddenly heard gunshots ringing out from the parking lot. When they rushed outside to investigate, they encountered the armed man firing his weapon. Despite repeated commands to drop the firearm, the suspect refused and pointed the weapon at officers. Troopers responded with deadly force, fatally shooting him on the scene.

Authorities quickly secured the area, shutting down Route 9 for several hours while investigators combed the site for evidence. Officials confirmed that the threat was neutralized and that there is no ongoing danger to the public.

The gunman’s identity has not yet been publicly released, and a motive for the attack remains unclear. There were no additional injuries reported.

As with all officer-involved shootings in New York State, the Attorney General’s Office is now reviewing the incident. Body camera footage from the officers involved does exist but has not yet been released.
