3-Year-Old Found ‘Shivering’ on Roof While Parents were Passed Out from All-Nighter: Cops

A horrifying incident in Glenville, West Virginia, led to the arrest of a couple after police discovered their 3-year-old child alone and crying on the roof of their home. Authorities responded to the scene around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday after receiving a call about a child in distress. When officers arrived, they found the toddler hunched over, visibly shivering in the cold rain, frightened, and approximately 12 feet above the ground. The child had reportedly managed to access the roof without the adults in the house noticing. Officers had to force entry by unlocking several doors and breaking a window to safely rescue the child. Shockingly, a man inside the home was completely unaware that the child had been outside and on the roof.
Disturbing Conditions Inside the Home
As officers searched the residence, they discovered a second young child — a male juvenile — inside a locked children’s room. The child was confined in a crib, and the room itself showed signs of severe neglect. Police reported that both children were covered in feces and urine from the waist down. Inside the room, feces were smeared and caked on the wall, indicating long-term unsanitary conditions. Authorities stated that the room had been locked from the outside, preventing the children from leaving. The level of neglect prompted immediate concern for the children’s health and safety.

Parents Claim All-Night Gaming Session
The parents, identified as Sonya Adkins, 25, and Mason Adkins, 29, admitted to police that they had not checked on the children since 8 p.m. the previous night. During interviews, both confessed to staying up all night playing video games. Sonya Adkins also allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana during the night. Police believe the couple was asleep during the entire morning and early afternoon, completely unaware that one of their children had made it onto the roof and was exposed to the harsh weather conditions.
Charges and Custody Status
Following the disturbing discovery, both Sonya and Mason Adkins were arrested and charged with two counts each of child neglect creating risk of serious injury or death, as well as one count of conspiracy. The seriousness of the allegations and the shocking details of the case have drawn local attention. The couple is currently being held at the Central Regional Jail, each on a $50,000 bond. The two children are now in protective custody, and child protective services have launched an investigation into the living conditions and long-term welfare of the minors. This case has highlighted the dangers of parental neglect and raised concerns about child welfare in the area. Authorities continue to investigate and will determine whether further charges are warranted.
