New Bedford Man Killed in Dartmouth Crash Identified as 62-Year-Old Anthony Moniz
A fatal crash on Interstate 195 in Dartmouth has left a local family and community in mourning. Massachusetts State Police have confirmed that 62-year-old Anthony Moniz of New Bedford was the man killed in a multi-vehicle collision late Wednesday morning.
The crash, which involved a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles, happened around 11:20 a.m. on the westbound side of the highway. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found Moniz unresponsive inside his vehicle. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
A Sudden, Tragic Loss
Family and friends of Moniz are heartbroken. Known around New Bedford as a dependable and warmhearted man, his death has left a deep void in the lives of those who knew him.
“He was the type of person who always waved hello,” one neighbor shared. “Quiet, respectful, and kind — he didn’t deserve this. No one does.”

Though the details of the crash are still being pieced together, investigators say Moniz was traveling westbound when the collision occurred near Exit 13, not far from Reed Road. The crash brought traffic to a standstill and forced police to shut down several lanes for nearly three hours as they worked to clear the scene and begin their investigation.
Ongoing Investigation
The Massachusetts State Police have brought in several specialized units to assist, including the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section. While it’s not yet clear exactly what led to the crash, police say they are working to determine the sequence of events and whether any traffic violations or mechanical issues played a role.
No other serious injuries were reported from the crash, though the other drivers involved were evaluated at the scene. Investigators have not released their identities.
Heavy Traffic and Delays
For commuters in the area, the crash caused significant delays. I-195 West was closed for more than three hours as troopers and first responders worked the scene. Traffic finally resumed around 2:30 p.m., though drivers continued to experience slowdowns throughout the afternoon.
Officials thanked the public for their patience and urged anyone with information about the crash to contact the Massachusetts State Police.
Remembering Anthony Moniz
As the investigation continues, friends and neighbors in New Bedford are remembering Anthony Moniz not just as a crash victim, but as someone who mattered — a friend, a relative, a familiar face in the community.
“He didn’t say much, but he always asked how my kids were,” another neighbor recalled. “It’s just so hard to believe he’s gone.”
Moniz’s family has asked for privacy as they navigate this difficult time. No funeral arrangements have been announced yet, though those close to him say they expect a service to be held in New Bedford later this week.
Staying Safe on the Roads
Tragic accidents like this one are a painful reminder of how quickly life can change. Police and local officials are once again urging drivers to stay alert, especially on busy stretches of highway like I-195. The mix of commercial and personal vehicles can make these roads particularly dangerous when conditions change quickly.
For now, though, the focus remains on remembering a man whose life ended far too soon.
“Our thoughts are with Mr. Moniz’s family and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss,” said a spokesperson for the State Police.
