Unsubstantiated Sexual Assault Claim Leads to Slaying of Dave’s Killer Bread Employee

Cody James Denewith, 27, has been sentenced to over 27 years in prison after he shot and killed his coworker, Nathan Dean Anderson, 25, at Dave’s Killer Bread in 2024. Denewith’s actions were driven by his belief that Anderson had sexually assaulted his girlfriend, Dominique Marie Britt, 27. However, the claim was never substantiated, and his response led to a tragic loss of life. This case highlights the dangers of unchecked emotions and the consequences of baseless accusations.
The Events Leading to the Shooting
Denewith and Britt’s volatile relationship played a significant role in the fatal event. Days before the shooting, Denewith was arrested for domestic assault and briefly spent time in jail. During this period, Britt attended a gathering where she drank excessively. After the gathering, Britt told Denewith that Anderson may have sexually assaulted her, a claim that fueled Denewith’s rage. The district attorney’s office stated that Denewith became obsessed with the idea of revenge, believing the assault had occurred, even though no evidence supported Britt’s accusation. Consumed by anger, Denewith sought help from family members to exact revenge on Anderson. On the day of the shooting, Denewith asked Britt to pack his clothes and his “toy”—a” code word for his Sig Sauer P365 handgun. Britt, aware of Denewith’s intentions, complied with the request.

The Fatal Shooting and Aftermath
On April 29, 2024, Denewith carried out his violent plan. He confronted Anderson at work and fired three shots at him. Anderson was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Britt, who had knowingly assisted Denewith, was later charged with manslaughter in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon. She pleaded guilty in December 2024 and was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison. Denewith, having pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree and assault with a firearm, was sentenced to 27 and a half years in prison. His sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the loss of a life based on a false belief.
Dave’s Killer Bread’s Role in the Tragedy
Dave’s Killer Bread, where both Denewith and Anderson worked, is known as a “second chance” employer. The company is committed to hiring individuals with criminal backgrounds who are seeking to turn their lives around. Unfortunately, this tragedy occurred in a workplace that was meant to offer people a fresh start, underscoring how even supportive environments cannot always prevent catastrophic outcomes when emotions and false beliefs take over. The case of Denewith and Britt highlights the dangers of unchecked rage and the profound consequences that can arise from baseless accusations. While justice has been served, it comes at the cost of a young life, a family’s future, and the devastation caused by misguided revenge.
