Millions Think They’re Getting $1,702 from the IRS—But Only These People Actually Will

7

You’ve probably seen headlines or posts saying that people are getting a $1,702 check in 2025. Maybe you even wondered, “Is this a new stimulus payment from the IRS?” The short answer? Not exactly — but let’s break it down.

This payment isn’t from the IRS, and it’s not a national stimulus check. Instead, it’s a payout from something called the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend — a yearly benefit just for Alaskans.

Here’s everything you need to know (and why most people in the U.S. won’t see this money).

What’s the Alaska PFD?

The PFD is Alaska’s way of sharing the state’s oil money with its residents. Every year, people who live in Alaska full-time get a check from the state’s oil fund. The amount changes each year depending on how much money the fund earns.

For 2025, that payout is $1,702 per person. So if you’re part of a family of four living in Alaska, you could be getting more than $6,800 total. Not bad, right?

Who Gets the $1,702?

To qualify, you’ve got to check a few boxes:

  • You must’ve lived in Alaska all of 2024 — not just visited or stayed part-time.

  • You plan to stay in Alaska long-term.

  • You didn’t spend too much time out of state (there are a few exceptions, like military duty or medical reasons).

  • You’re in good legal standing — some serious criminal convictions or unpaid debts (like child support) can disqualify you.

And yes, kids can get it too, but a parent or guardian has to apply for them.

When Do Payments Go Out?

If you applied before the March 31, 2025 deadline, and everything checks out, here’s what to expect:

  • Direct deposits started going out on April 3, 2025.

  • If you’re getting a paper check or debit card, those are being mailed between April 19 and April 30.

To see where your payment stands, head to pfd.alaska.gov and log into your myAlaska account.

Heads-Up: It’s Taxable

This payment might feel like free money, but the IRS still wants to know about it. You’ll need to report it as income on your federal taxes when you file for 2025. So keep that in mind for next tax season.

Not in Alaska? This Doesn’t Apply to You

If you don’t live in Alaska, this payment doesn’t apply to you. There’s no new IRS stimulus check being sent out to everyone in the U.S. right now, no matter what the internet rumors say.

The $1,702 check is real — but only for eligible Alaskans. It’s not part of a new stimulus package, and it’s not something the rest of the country can claim.

If you’re an Alaskan who applied, check your account and keep an eye on your mail or bank account. And if you’re not in Alaska? Be careful about misinformation online. Scammers and fake news love to twist these kinds of stories.
