California Mom Falls 140 Feet to Her Death While Hiking with Family in Arizona
A family hiking trip in Sedona, Arizona, turned tragic when 40-year-old California mother Zaynab Joseph fell 140 feet to her death on Bear Mountain. Joseph was hiking with her husband and their one-year-old child when the incident occurred on April 15, 2024. The family was visiting the area and staying in a rented Airbnb.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, nearby hikers heard screams and discovered Joseph had fallen. One hiker descended to reach her and found her still breathing, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Emergency responders, including Sedona Fire and Search and Rescue teams, arrived promptly. Joseph’s husband and child were airlifted off the mountain, and her body was recovered.
Joseph, a part-time teacher from Garden Grove, California, was remembered by her sister, Farwa Zaidi, as having a “heart of gold” and being deeply cherished by her family.
Bear Mountain is known for its challenging terrain, with steep and difficult areas that require caution. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and has interviewed other hikers for more information.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and preparedness when engaging in outdoor activities, especially in areas with challenging landscapes.
