Bolsonaro’s Post-Surgical Recovery Hampered by New Health Issues
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, is experiencing a decline in health following a complex bowel surgery conducted on April 13, 2025. The procedure aimed to address intestinal adhesions and reconstruct his abdominal wall, complications stemming from a 2018 stabbing incident. Currently, Bolsonaro remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) at DF Star Hospital in Brasília. Medical reports indicate elevated blood pressure and deteriorating liver function, prompting additional imaging tests to assess his condition.

This surgery marks the sixth abdominal operation Bolsonaro has undergone since the 2018 attack. Doctors have described this latest procedure as the most complex to date, necessitating meticulous post-operative care. Bolsonaro is currently receiving parenteral nutrition and undergoing physical therapy, with no specified discharge date from the ICU.
Amid his health challenges, Bolsonaro is also facing legal proceedings. A Supreme Court officer recently visited his hospital room to formally notify him of an upcoming trial related to an alleged attempt to stage a coup following the 2022 election. This notification reportedly caused visible agitation and a spike in his blood pressure. Bolsonaro’s legal team has been given five days to submit a preliminary defence.
Despite medical advice against visitors, Bolsonaro has engaged with political associates and family members from his hospital bed. He appeared in a live broadcast on his son’s YouTube channel and gave an interview to a local television network, expressing his belief that the trial is politically motivated.
As Bolsonaro’s health remains a concern, the intersection of his medical condition and legal challenges continues to draw national attention.
