According to police reports, the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released pending further investigation, had not slept for several days when he allegedly attacked his 70-year-old mother in their shared home. Neighbours told reporters the man had been acting erratically in recent days, appearing paranoid and agitated.

When police arrived at the residence following a 911 call from another family member, they found the elderly woman unresponsive and severely injured. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers reported struggling to restrain the suspect, who they described as exhibiting “superhuman-like strength.” It reportedly took multiple officers to subdue him, and he was later hospitalised for evaluation before being taken into custody.

Authorities say the man has a history of mental health struggles, and his behaviour in the days leading up to the attack was consistent with a drug-induced psychosis or severe sleep-related delusion. Toxicology results are pending.

The victim, described by friends as a kind and soft-spoken woman battling chronic illness, had been living with her son so he could help care for her. “She was so frail,” one neighbour said. “It’s heartbreaking and disturbing to think of what she went through.”

Mental health advocates are once again emphasising the need for early intervention and support services for families dealing with mental illness or substance use.

The suspect is being held without bail and is expected to undergo a psychological evaluation before formal arraignment. A court date has not yet been scheduled.
