Tax Stress? Here’s How to Easily Access Your Social Security Form SSA-1099 Now!
Let’s be real—nobody’s jumping up and down excited to deal with tax forms, right? But if you got Social Security benefits last year, there’s one form you absolutely need to get your hands on: the SSA-1099.
Good news—it’s already available for 2024. But I know what you’re thinking: How do I find it? Is it hard to get?
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about getting your SSA-1099 without all the hassle.
What Is the SSA-1099 Form, Anyway?
If you received Social Security benefits last year, the SSA-1099 shows how much money you got from the Social Security Administration in 2024. This form is key when it comes time to file your taxes because it helps you figure out if any of those benefits are taxable.
But if you only got SSI (Supplemental Security Income), you won’t get this form, because SSI isn’t taxable. Simple enough, right?
Also, if you’re not a U.S. citizen and got Social Security benefits, you’ll get a different form called SSA-1042S.
How to Get Your SSA-1099
I’m guessing you don’t want to be digging around for this form forever, so let me show you the easiest ways to grab it:
1. Download It Online in Minutes
This is by far the quickest way:
-
Head to My Social Security Account
-
Log in (or create an account if you don’t have one)
-
Once you’re in, find the link that says “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S”
-
Choose the year (2024) and download it right there
Super easy, and you can grab this year’s form plus the past six years’ worth of SSA-1099s if you need them!
2. Request It Over the Phone
Not an online person? Totally fine. You can give the SSA a call at:
-
1-800-772-1213 (TTY users: 1-800-325-0778)
-
They’re open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Just follow the instructions, and they’ll send you a replacement SSA-1099 in the mail.
3. Go to the SSA Office in Person
If you like face-to-face service, you can head to your nearest Social Security office. But, heads up, many offices now ask that you make an appointment first, especially for stuff like getting forms.
4. If You’re Outside the U.S.
Living abroad? No worries, you can still get your form:
-
You can log into your My Social Security account (you’ll need to use ID.me to verify your identity)
-
Or if you can’t access it online, just reach out to the Federal Benefits Unit nearest to you
Do You Actually Need This Form?
If you received Social Security benefits in 2024, then yep, this form is for you. But if you only got SSI, don’t worry about it—since SSI isn’t taxable, you won’t need the SSA-1099.
If you’re doing your taxes or handing your stuff over to an accountant, this form will help them figure out whether any of your benefits are taxable. (It doesn’t always happen, but sometimes it does.)
