In a major financial relief initiative, the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) of California has approved a $6,000 annual stimulus package for 2025, translating to $500 in monthly payments for qualified residents. This move is part of a broader state effort to combat rising costs of living and support working-class families still feeling the effects of inflation and economic instability.

What Is the $6,000 FTB Stimulus?

This program, similar to California’s previous Golden State Stimulus efforts, offers direct cash relief totalling $6,000 over 12 months. The payments are intended to help low- and moderate-income households cover essentials like rent, groceries, utilities, and childcare.

Unlike one-time federal stimulus checks, these monthly instalments provide consistent financial support and are distributed through California’s Franchise Tax Board, the agency that handles tax processing and payments.

Who Is Eligible for the $500 Monthly Payments?

To qualify for the full $6,000 benefit in 2025, residents must meet specific criteria outlined by the FTB:

  • Filed a 2024 California state income tax return by the April 2025 deadline

  • Earned less than $75,000 in adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2024

  • Be a California resident for more than half of 2024

  • Hold a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

  • Not be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return

  • Receive income from work, Social Security, or disability

Residents who meet all criteria will automatically be enrolled for monthly direct deposits beginning July 2025, with no separate application required.

When Will Payments Begin?

The FTB has announced the first batch of payments will start on or after July 15, 2025. Eligible individuals who have set up direct deposit with the state can expect faster payment processing, while paper checks may take longer to arrive by mail.

The monthly payments will continue through June 2026, totalling $6,000 for the year.
