The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and West Kennedy Boulevard, a busy stretch known for heavy traffic. Witnesses told authorities that the driver of the minivan and the motorcyclist had been involved in a heated exchange moments before the collision.

According to Tampa Police, both vehicles had been weaving through traffic and exchanging gestures before the minivan abruptly swerved into the motorcycle’s lane. That’s when, investigators say, the van intentionally struck the rear of the bike, causing the rider to lose control and violently fall onto the pavement.

Emergency crews responded within minutes and treated the motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man, for non-life-threatening injuries, including road rash and a possible fractured wrist. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital and is expected to recover.

The minivan driver, who initially fled the scene, was tracked down through license plate recognition technology and arrested shortly afterwards at a residence in nearby Carrollwood. He is now facing multiple charges, including:

  • Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

  • Leaving the scene of an accident with injury

  • Reckless driving

Police said the suspect admitted to the confrontation but claimed he “didn’t mean to hit the bike.” Surveillance footage and eyewitness testimony, however, reportedly paint a more intentional act.

“This was not an accident,” said Tampa Police Sgt. Angela Mendes. “This was someone using their vehicle as a weapon during a moment of rage. It could’ve been deadly.”

Investigators are urging any additional witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.
