The honorees were Corporal Luis Paez Jr., Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller Jr., and Deputy Sheriff Ignacio “Dan” Diaz. In November 2024, while assisting with a disabled motorcycle on Southern Boulevard in Loxahatchee, Florida, the three deputies were tragically struck and killed by an SUV that veered off the road.

President Trump, who attended their memorial service last year, described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” that profoundly impacted the Palm Beach community. He praised the deputies as “beloved by everyone and respected by all,” noting their dedication to public safety and their roles in presidential motorcade security.

A New National Honor

The Medal of Sacrifice is a newly established national award intended to recognize law enforcement officers and first responders who make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The medals were designed and crafted by Tiffany & Co., continuing the company’s historical role in creating significant national honors.

During the ceremony, family members of the fallen deputies received the medals. President Trump also presented a fourth medal to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office as a symbol of collective remembrance. He expressed hope that the medal would rarely need to be awarded, stating, “Hopefully it’s maybe never going to be given out.”

Legislative Efforts and Future Implications

Coinciding with the ceremony, Florida Representative Brian Mast introduced a bill in Congress to formalize the Medal of Sacrifice as a national honor for all first responders who die in the line of duty. President Trump indicated that his administration is considering retroactively awarding the medal to other fallen heroes, emphasizing the nation’s enduring gratitude for their service.

The establishment of the Medal of Sacrifice represents a significant step in recognizing the bravery and dedication of first responders across the United States. It serves as a poignant reminder of the risks these individuals face daily and the profound impact of their service on communities nationwide.
