In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at the renowned Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Firefighters from the Union Fire District responded to the scene around 3:45 a.m., encountering heavy smoke and flames fueled by strong winds. Despite their efforts, the blaze caused significant internal damage due to fire, smoke, and water, leading officials to believe that the majority of the building will need to be replaced.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state fire marshal. The restaurant’s last fire inspection in September 2024 noted about 20 minor violations, all of which were corrected within the allotted 30 days. Notably, the establishment did not have a sprinkler system, which was not required under the fire code.

Owner Perry Raso expressed deep gratitude for the swift response of the firefighters and the outpouring of support from the community. He emphasized that his immediate priority is assisting the restaurant’s 300 full-time and seasonal employees. Raso is working closely with the state Department of Labor and Training, the governor’s office, and other public officials to identify available resources for his staff.

Established in 2009, Matunuck Oyster Bar has been a staple in the local community, known for its “pond-to-table” approach, sourcing from its own seven-acre aquaculture operation since 2002. The restaurant has received national acclaim, with its littlenecks and chourico dish being lauded as one of the “Best Dishes” of the year in 2023, and it was listed among USA Today’s “Restaurants of the Year” in 2024.

The fire’s timing, just days before Memorial Day weekend, marks a significant loss for the community and the local economy, as the restaurant is a popular destination for both residents and tourists. Despite the setback, Raso remains committed to rebuilding and reopening the establishment, stating, “We are humbled and grateful for what Matunuck Oyster Bar represents to so many people. While we are heartbroken that our doors will be temporarily closed, we are committed to opening them back up and welcoming guests back to our tables as soon as possible” .
