Rep. Jared Golden Announces Bid for Fifth Term in Maine’s 2nd District
Democratic U.S. Representative Jared Golden has officially declared his intention to seek re-election in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle in one of the nation’s most competitive swing districts.

Golden, a Marine Corps veteran and centrist Democrat, announced his decision on May 20, 2025, emphasizing his commitment to restoring balance in Congress and aiding Democrats in reclaiming the House majority. He stated, “I have decided the best way to continue serving the people of Maine is to do my part to restore balance in Congress by helping to win back the House of Representatives”.
Golden’s announcement comes amid speculation about his potential candidacy for governor or the U.S. Senate. However, he has opted to focus on his current role, citing the importance of his district in the broader national political landscape. Maine’s 2nd District, which encompasses the northern four-fifths of the state, has consistently supported former President Donald Trump in the past three presidential elections, making Golden’s seat a prime target for Republicans.
The upcoming election is expected to be particularly contentious, as former Republican Governor Paul LePage has announced his candidacy for the same seat. LePage, a staunch Trump ally known for his combative political style, previously served as Maine’s governor from 2011 to 2019. Golden has expressed determination to prevent LePage from entering Congress, stating, “I am going to do what it takes to make sure no one like Paul LePage blusters his way into Congress”.
Golden’s campaign is expected to highlight his bipartisan approach and focus on issues such as healthcare, workers’ rights, and support for Maine’s heritage industries. His campaign manager, Jordan Kathleen Burns, emphasized Golden’s track record, stating, “He’s a proven winner and the right choice to beat a candidate like Paul LePage and restore checks and balances in Congress”.
As the 2026 election cycle unfolds, Maine’s 2nd Congressional District will undoubtedly be a focal point in the battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives, with both parties investing significant resources and attention into this pivotal race.
