Hazardous Conditions Lead to Fatal Accident

Daniel, a computer science major from Pinole, California, was swimming with three fraternity brothers and two visiting sorority members when the group encountered unexpected hazardous water conditions. Recent heavy rains in the Havasu Valley had significantly increased water flow, creating strong currents, crosswinds, and swells. While several fraternity members attempted to rescue the swimmers, Daniel was swept away by a sudden wave and did not resurface.

Emergency responders from the San Bernardino and Mohave County Sheriff’s Departments launched a search operation, deploying divers, sonar equipment, and a remotely operated vehicle. Daniel’s body was recovered the following morning around 8:54 a.m.

Remembering Simon Daniel

Daniel was remembered by his fraternity, Sigma Pi, as a vibrant and kind individual who was deeply admired on campus. “He was the heart of the fraternity—genuine, joyful, and someone who brightened every room with his brilliant smile,” the fraternity said in a statement.

A candlelight vigil was held on Sunday evening in Fullerton, drawing over 200 attendees who gathered to honor Daniel’s life and legacy. His former schools, St. Joseph Elementary School in Pinole and St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, also expressed their condolences and shared memories of Daniel’s compassionate spirit and dedication to serving others.
