Incident Overview

On the night of February 7, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 13800 block of Southwest 266th Street. Upon arrival, they discovered multiple shell casings scattered across the area. Shortly thereafter, Rae’quan Smith was transported by bystanders to a local hospital, where he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

Arrests and Charges

Following an extensive investigation, MDSO detectives arrested 19-year-old Elton Hightower of Florida City and 17-year-old Deashia Smith, the victim’s sister, on May 21, 2025. Both individuals face charges of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon. Additionally, Smith is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Evidence and Witness Accounts

Investigators linked a firearm found in Smith’s possession during a March 10 arrest to the weapon used in her brother’s murder. A witness came forward on April 23, identifying both Smith and Hightower as the shooters. According to the witness, the suspects fired at Rae’quan Smith as he stood on the street before fleeing the scene.

Cellphone data placed Hightower at the crime scene. During questioning, he denied involvement. However, Smith admitted to her mother that she was in the vehicle used during the shooting, stating they intended to “do a drill” on someone named Rashad.

Current Status

Both suspects are currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The case remains under investigation, with authorities urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

This case underscores the complexities of familial relationships and the devastating impact of gun violence within communities.
