You Could Get $1,000 Back on Rent or Property Taxes — Here’s How to Apply Now

If you’re a senior, living with a disability, or just trying to get by on a tight budget in Pennsylvania, there’s some good news. The state offers a program that can put up to $1,000 back in your pocket to help with rent or property taxes.

This isn’t complicated or full of catches. It’s real money that’s meant to help people who need it most — especially with how expensive housing is getting these days.

What’s This Program About?

It’s called the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, and basically, it gives you back some of the rent or property taxes you’ve already paid.

If you live in certain cities with higher taxes—like Philadelphia or Pittsburgh—you might get a little extra, too.

Who Can Get This Money?

Here’s the simple part:

  • You’re 65 or older

  • Or you’re a widow or widower, 50 or older

  • Or you’re 18 or older and have a permanent disability

  • And your household income is $45,000 or less a year

If you rent, only half of your Social Security income counts toward that limit — so that gives you a bit of wiggle room.

How Much Could You Get Back?

That depends on how much money you make. Here’s a rough idea:

  • If you make up to about $8,270, you could get the full $1,000.

  • Make between $8,271 and $15,510? You could get up to $770.

  • Between $15,511 and $18,610? Around $460.

  • Between $18,611 and $45,000? Up to $380.

And remember, if you live in certain cities, there’s extra cash available on top of that.

How Do You Apply?

It’s easier than you might think. You can:

  • Apply online at mypath.pa.gov. Just have your income and rent or property tax documents handy.

  • Or print out the application form, fill it out, and mail it in. The form is called PA-1000, and you send it to:

    PA Department of Revenue
    Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program
    P.O. Box 280503
    Harrisburg, PA 17128-0503

  • If you want someone to help you fill it out, visit your local Department of Revenue office or Area Agency on Aging. They’re there to help.

Don’t Miss the Deadline

You have until December 31, 2025, to get your application in. Just make sure it’s postmarked by then.

Housing costs are tough, and every little bit helps. If you qualify for this program, don’t leave money on the table. It’s your hard-earned money, and the state wants to help you keep more of it.

If you want, I can help you with the application or explain anything that’s confusing. Just ask!
