Deputy Daniel Sherrer Killed in Line of Duty
Deputy Daniel Sherrer, 31, was shot and killed on May 26, 2025, after arriving at a residence on County Road 26 in Marengo, approximately 35 miles north of Columbus. Sherrer had served with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office since March 2021 and was known for his positive demeanor and dedication to the community.
According to Sheriff John Hinton, Sherrer was fatally wounded shortly after arriving at the scene. Both Sherrer and the suspect were transported to a hospital, where Sherrer was pronounced dead. The suspect remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Suspect Identified and Charged
Court documents identify the suspect as 53-year-old Brian Michael Wilson. An affidavit reveals that Wilson made threatening statements to a neighbor prior to the incident, including, “If I was to die tonight, I’d be OK with it.” Body camera footage reportedly shows Wilson seated on a porch with a visible firearm, issuing threats to Deputy Sherrer. An exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in Sherrer’s fatal injuries. Two firearms were recovered from the scene: a Walther PK .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol and an M&P Bodyguard .38 caliber revolver.
Wilson has been charged with aggravated murder and remains in custody at the hospital. Sheriff Hinton has expressed disdain for the suspect, refusing to mention his name publicly.
Community and Statewide Response
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office expressed profound grief over the loss of Deputy Sherrer, stating, “There are no words to express the pain being felt by our office.” Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Sherrer’s service. Attorney General Dave Yost remarked, “My heart is torn by the loss of yet another Ohio law enforcement officer, who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community.”
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, is leading the investigation into the shooting. Sheriff Hinton noted that this is the first officer killed in the line of duty during his tenure.
