A Majestic Reappearance

On May 30, 2025, Krystyna Kurth, coordinator of conservation action at Shedd Aquarium, encountered Chonk while kayaking through the river’s “Wild Mile” area. Kurth, training new staff members at the time, captured a photo of the turtle basking on her usual perch—a concrete pillar near Goose Island. “We paddled up, and I was excited because I had some new staff with me, and I was like, ‘You guys get to meet the local legend,'” Kurth shared.

A Symbol of Ecological Recovery

Chonk’s return is more than a heartwarming sight; it’s a testament to the improving health of the Chicago River. Once heavily polluted, the river has seen significant ecological restoration efforts in recent years. The presence of Chonk, along with other wildlife like softshell turtles, black-crowned night herons, and beavers, indicates a thriving ecosystem. “Chonk is not only ‘our own celebrity’—she’s also a sign ‘that the Chicago River is a lot cleaner than maybe people think it is,'” Kurth noted.

Community Engagement and Conservation Efforts

The Shedd Aquarium’s “Kayak for Conservation” tours offer the public an opportunity to explore the river and learn about its wildlife firsthand. These tours, led by experts like Kurth, emphasize the importance of respecting natural habitats while enjoying urban nature. “We want to make sure we’re teaching people to be excited to see her while also maintaining the distance to keep her safe and help her feel comfortable here,” Kurth emphasized.

A Viral Sensation with a Purpose

Chonkosaurus’s fame has reignited public interest in urban wildlife and conservation. Social media buzzes with the hashtag #Chonkosaurus, drawing attention to the success of environmental initiatives in Chicago. As the city continues to invest in ecological restoration, Chonk stands as a living symbol of nature’s resilience and the positive impact of community-driven conservation efforts.

For those eager to catch a glimpse of Chonk this summer, the best chances are on sunny days near Goose Island. Remember to maintain a respectful distance to ensure the safety and comfort of this cherished urban icon.
