In the early hours of Saturday, May 31, a drive-by shooting disrupted a post-prom celebration near St. Sabina Church in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, leaving seven teenagers injured.

The Incident

Around 1:55 a.m., a large group of teenagers had gathered in the 1200 block of West 78th Street, near St. Sabina Church, following prom events. As police officers were attempting to disperse the crowd, an unidentified vehicle drove by and opened fire into the assembly. The victims, all males aged between 17 and 19, sustained gunshot wounds to various parts of their bodies. One 18-year-old was reported in serious condition after being shot in the leg and chest; the others were listed in fair condition.

Community Response

Father Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Church and a long-time anti-violence advocate, expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the incident. He emphasized the need for parental involvement and community vigilance, stating, “What has to stop this, is parents knowing where their kids are at 2 o’clock in the morning.”

In response to the shooting, St. Sabina Church announced the opening of an emergency assistance center to provide support for victims, witnesses, and their families. Additionally, a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

Ongoing Investigation

As of now, no arrests have been made. Chicago police are actively investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward. Community members are encouraged to assist in the investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
