Around 2 a.m. Saturday, a masked gunman posing as a police officer arrived at the Hoffman home in Champlin and opened fire. Shockingly, Yvette Hoffman threw herself over their adult daughter, Hope, shielding her from bullets. Hope, in her 20s, emerged unharmed. Both John and Yvette were shot multiple times; John sustained six wounds and Yvette five, according to family updates.

The couple was rushed to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, where they underwent surgery. “A bullet just very nearly missed Senator Hoffman’s heart,” a family member confirmed. As of Sunday evening, both were reported stable and recovering.

Authorities and state leaders are calling the incident a politically motivated assassination attempt. Minutes later, the suspected gunman, Vance Luther Boelter, allegedly traveled to the home of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in Brooklyn Park, fatally shooting both.

A statewide manhunt ensued. Boelter remains at large, described as armed and dangerous. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest.
