Storm Details

State meteorologists had issued an enhanced severe storm warning—level 3 out of 5 risk—for areas including Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor. The storms, which carried wind gusts over 58 mph and dumped up to 2 inches of rain, rolled through mid-afternoon into the evening, with potential spin-up tornadoes reported in parts of Midland and Saginaw.

Power Outages Mount

By late evening, outages spiked:

  • Nearly 10,000 Consumers Energy customers in West Michigan were in the dark, especially around Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

  • DTE Energy reported about 16,800 customers without power in Metro Detroit.

Michigan crews from Consumers Energy, DTE, and Indiana Michigan Power are working through the night to restore power—estimated to be back in many areas by Thursday morning.

Heat Wave on the Horizon

Following the storm, Michigan swings into summer heat:

  • Saturday and Sunday will see highs in the 90s°F, with heat indexes pushing into the mid-90s.

  • Residents should watch out for afternoon storms continuing through the weekend and stay cool and hydrated.

Why It Matters

  • The storms and outages highlight Michigan’s aging power grid, which is already under pressure from climate-driven extremes.

  • Public safety officials urge vigilance around downed power lines and trees after dark, calling outages a threat to vulnerable communities.

  • Utility firms are under growing demand to modernize infrastructure—repairs, tree trimming, and smart grid upgrades are more essential than ever.
