FBI Director Warns of “Sleeper Cells” in U.S., Urges Sheriffs to Strengthen Local Security
Fort Lauderdale, FL — June 23, 2025 — FBI Director Kash Patel delivered a powerful message to hundreds of law enforcement leaders gathered Monday at the National Sheriffs’ Association conference in Broward County. His warning: the threat of domestic terror is growing, and local sheriffs must be ready.

Patel’s remarks come just weeks after the U.S. carried out military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, an event that has raised national security concerns about retaliation. In his address, Patel suggested the possibility that Iran-linked sleeper cells could already be inside the United States—quietly waiting for a signal.
“These aren’t just distant threats. We have to be prepared for what might be right here, in our neighborhoods,” Patel told the packed room.
The director emphasized the critical role of local sheriffs, calling them the “eyes and ears of terror intelligence in America.” He urged increased cooperation between federal and local agencies to monitor suspicious activity, protect sensitive locations, and respond swiftly to potential threats.
Sheriffs from across the country said they’re already taking action. Caroline County Sheriff Donald Baker confirmed increased patrols at schools, synagogues, and other public gathering spots in major cities, including Miami-Dade. Bonneville County Sheriff Samuel Hulse said security is also tightening around tourist-heavy sites like Yellowstone National Park.
Patel also tied national security to the need for stronger border enforcement, warning that unsecured borders could provide opportunities for bad actors to enter the U.S. undetected.
The conference, which runs through June 26, includes sessions on criminal trends, homeland security, and how to improve coordination between jurisdictions.
In a lighter moment, the FBI director joined sheriffs in honoring 12-year-old Decahjaye “DJ” Daniel, a young boy from Georgia who has supported law enforcement across the country. DJ was sworn in as an honorary sheriff during the event—drawing applause and underscoring the community spirit at the heart of the gathering.
