Lakeland, FL (33803)— A 17-year-old boy is facing serious charges after allegedly beating his uncle to death inside a Lakeland home following an argument about a denied sleepover, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The violent incident unfolded in the Cleveland Heights neighborhood near Crystal Lake Acres Drive. Authorities say the teen became enraged after his 52-year-old uncle told him he could not attend a sleepover. The confrontation escalated into physical violence, during which the teen repeatedly struck the man in the head.

Deputies say the victim suffered a severe brain bleed and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. His name has not yet been released publicly.

“This was a senseless and tragic act of domestic violence,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “One family lost a beloved member, and another is forever changed by a single violent outburst.”

The teen suspect was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held at a juvenile detention center. Charges are pending, and prosecutors are determining whether he will be tried as an adult.

Neighborhood in Shock

The incident has left residents of the normally quiet area stunned.

“We never expected anything like this. He was such a quiet man,” said Janelle Harper, who runs a nearby convenience store. “This block is close — this feels like a nightmare.”

A local resident shared a photo of the scene showing crime scene tape and multiple police cruisers still present into the evening.

This marks the second fatal domestic violence incident involving a teenager in Polk County this month, stirring concern among community members and officials alike.

Local court records indicate that juvenile-related violent crimes in Polk County have risen by 13% since the start of 2025.
