Deadly Poolside Dispute: Philly Lifeguard Shoots Two Teens — One Killed in Shocking Scene
Philadelphia, PA (ZIP: 19121), (June 30, 2025) — A 24-year-old lifeguard allegedly shot two teenage boys outside Mill Creek Pool in Philadelphia’s Brewerytown neighborhood on Saturday evening, leaving one dead and another hospitalized, police confirmed.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. near 22nd and Master Street, just outside the public pool facility. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the lifeguard claimed self-defense after an altercation with the teens allegedly escalated.
The victims have been identified as a 17-year-old boy, who died at the scene, and a 16-year-old who remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital. Authorities have not released their names due to their age.
“This was a tragic event, and we are still gathering details,” said Deputy Commissioner Thomas Harper. “The shooter stated he feared for his safety after a physical confrontation began.”

Witnesses reported hearing a heated argument followed by multiple gunshots. Dana Reynolds, a nearby resident and mother of three, described the scene: “There were kids everywhere — then I heard shots. This is terrifying.”
The lifeguard was taken into custody for questioning. As of Monday morning, no charges had been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident has prompted city officials to temporarily close Mill Creek Pool and initiate a citywide review of security measures at all public recreational facilities.
“This is now the second violent incident near a pool this summer,” said Mayor Jim Kenney in a press release. “We must address the growing concerns around youth safety in our public spaces.”
