A 46-year-old man was arrested in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday after allegedly posting threats to kill then-US President Donald Trump on social media. The arrest followed a tip received by local authorities on January 19, just one day before Trump was set to take the oath of office.

According to Police Chief Tony Araujo, the threats were made in Facebook posts by Shannon Atkins, in which he expressed violent rhetoric and strong political opinions aimed at President Trump. โ€œThey were violent rhetoric, political views, and his opinion aimed at the president,โ€ said Araujo during a press briefing about the nature of the threats.

The police took swift action, arresting Atkins near his home in West Palm Beach on Friday night. Upon his arrest, Atkins was found to be in possession of three packets of cocaine in his pocket, according to the authorities.

The U.S. Secret Service was promptly notified about the case, as it is responsible for investigating threats against the president. The arrest highlights the seriousness with which authorities handle threats to national security and the safety of public officials.

Atkinsโ€™ arrest has drawn attention to the dangers of online threats and the ability of law enforcement to track and respond to such incidents. Authorities continue to investigate the case, and Atkins will face charges related to his threats against the president, as well as potential drug-related charges.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident serves as a reminder of the heightened security measures surrounding public figures, particularly the president, and the vigilant efforts of law enforcement agencies to protect them from harm.
