A horrifying case has shaken the small town of Canandaigua, New York, as seven people have been charged in the brutal torture and murder of 24-year-old Sam Nordquist. The young man, who had traveled from Minnesota to New York late last year, suffered unimaginable abuse before his death.

Authorities say Nordquist endured weeks of physical, sexual, and psychological torture before he was killed on February 2. His body was discovered in a field in Yates County on February 13, and the details of what happened to him are almost too terrible to comprehend.

Who Was Sam Nordquist?

Sam Nordquist was a 24-year-old Black transgender man from Oakdale, Minnesota. He loved fashion, social media, and working with animals. In September 2024, he traveled to New York to meet someone he had connected with online. His plan was to stay for two weeks and then return home.

The last time his family heard from him was on January 1, when he sent a message saying, “I love you, and I’ll call tomorrow.” That call never came. After weeks of silence, his loved ones filed a missing person report on February 9. Four days later, their worst fears were confirmed.

The Seven People Charged

Seven people have now been indicted on first-degree murder, kidnapping, and other charges:

  • Precious Arzuaga, 38
  • Thomas Eaves, 21 (Arzuaga’s son)
  • Jennifer Quijano, 30
  • Kyle Sage, 33
  • Patrick Goodwin, 30
  • Emily Motyka, 19
  • Kimberly Sochia, 29

Prosecutors say Nordquist was held captive and tortured for more than a month before being killed. Shockingly, two children, aged seven and twelve, were allegedly forced to take part in the abuse.

A Crime So Horrific, the Charges Were Upgraded

Ontario County District Attorney Kelly Wolford described the case as “beyond horrifying.” Initially, the suspects faced second-degree murder charges, but after reviewing the extent of Nordquist’s suffering, prosecutors upgraded the charges to first-degree murder.

If convicted, the accused could spend the rest of their lives behind bars with no chance of parole.

“This was not just a hate crime,” Wolford said. “This was something even worse.”

Community in Mourning

News of Nordquist’s death has devastated the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Friends and advocates have held vigils in his honor, demanding justice and calling for stronger protections against violence targeting transgender people.

His loved ones remember him as a kind, joyful person who had his whole life ahead of him. Now, they are left grieving a life taken far too soon.

What Happens Next?

Investigators are still piecing together exactly what happened in the weeks leading up to Nordquist’s death. They urge anyone with information to come forward.

For now, a grieving family, a heartbroken community, and a nation outraged by this horrific crime wait for justice.
