Deputy Charged with Aggravated Battery After Beating Woman with Belt: BSO

A detention deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), David Powell, was arrested on Monday after being accused of domestic battery. The allegations, which include multiple counts of aggravated battery, have raised concerns within the department, leading to his immediate suspension without pay.
Domestic Disturbance Leads to Arrest
The arrest took place in Dania Beach, where BSO deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance. When they arrived at the scene, Powell initially told authorities that he and a woman had only engaged in a verbal argument. However, after further questioning, the victim revealed a much darker story of abuse. The woman provided investigators with details of the physical abuse she endured. She claimed that Powell slapped her across the face and ear, which resulted in hearing loss. She also reported that Powell would beat her with a belt, leaving her with significant injuries. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment, and her condition helped investigators build a case against Powell.

Ongoing Abuse Revealed During Investigation
As detectives delved deeper into the case, they uncovered that the abuse had been ongoing for several months. The victim disclosed that Powell had been physically abusing her since March 2024, shedding light on a troubling pattern of violence. This new information prompted investigators to move quickly in taking Powell into custody. Powell was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery. In addition to his arrest, a risk protection order was issued, which led to the confiscation of his firearms. This is a significant step in ensuring the safety of the victim and preventing further violence.
BSO Responds to Allegations and Takes Action
Powell, who was hired by the Broward Sheriff’s Office on December 6, 2021, has been placed on administrative leave without pay while the investigation continues. BSO has made it clear that any violations of the law, especially those involving domestic violence, will not be tolerated, regardless of the individual’s position within the department. In response to the charges, Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony released a statement condemning domestic violence and emphasizing the importance of holding those accountable for their actions. “Domestic violence is never acceptable,” said Sheriff Tony. “This is a serious issue that devastates the safety and well-being of individuals and families. Whenever anyone in this community, including employees of this agency, breaks the law, they will be held accountable for their actions.”
Call for Support
This case serves as a stark reminder of the severity of domestic violence and the importance of supporting victims who come forward. BSO’s response highlights their commitment to accountability, sending a strong message that officers and deputies who violate the law will face consequences. Sheriff Tony also urged anyone affected by domestic violence to seek help, stating, “I want victims of domestic violence to know that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call 911 for help.” As the investigation continues, both the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the community remain focused on supporting the victim and ensuring that justice is served.
