Fake Facebook Post Targets Florida Sheriff Candidate, Sparks Criminal Probe

A fake Facebook post falsely portraying St. Lucie County Sheriff candidate Richard Del Toro as using a racial slur has ignited a criminal investigation, with evidence pointing toward a former political rival.

The Alleged Smear Campaign

On July 19, 2023, a Facebook post surfaced from an account impersonating Del Toro. The post contained a racial slur and was disseminated to key political figures in the county, including a commissioner and the local GOP. Del Toro, now serving as sheriff, reported the post as fake, prompting a months-long investigation.

Tracing the Source

Investigators obtained search warrants for Meta, revealing that the fake account, under the alias “Jambar Brown,” was initially named “Richard Del Toro” and used his profile picture. Further investigation traced the IP address to a business operated by a family member of former Sheriff Keith Pearson. Additionally, the phone number linked to the account was associated with Pearson’s home address and registered to his Social Security number.

Legal Proceedings and Defence

Pearson’s attorney, Patrick Lawlor, denies his client’s involvement, calling the evidence “ridiculous.” Lawlor has requested the removal of the 19th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office from the case, citing a conflict of interest due to State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl’s endorsement of Del Toro’s campaign.

Potential Charges

The investigation is focused on potential charges of identity theft and unlawful use of a two-way communication device. A judge has yet to decide whether the case will remain with the current judicial circuit or be reassigned.
