Many Americans receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or other low-income benefits are noticing a boost in their monthly payments this year. Thanks to a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) implemented in January 2025, average monthly payments have increased, with some recipients seeing amounts around $1,500.

Understanding the $1,500 Payment

The Social Security Administration (SSA) applies annual COLA increases to help benefits keep pace with inflation. In 2025, this adjustment led to the following average monthly payments:

  • SSDI recipients: Approximately $1,500, reflecting the 2.5% COLA increase.

  • SSI recipients: Up to $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples.

These amounts can vary based on individual circumstances, including other income sources and state-specific supplements.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for these payments:

  • SSI: You must be aged 65 or older, blind, or disabled, with limited income and resources.

  • SSDI: You must have a qualifying disability and sufficient work credits.

Low-income individuals not currently receiving SSI or SSDI may be eligible for other assistance programs. It’s advisable to check with the SSA or local agencies for more information.

Payment Schedule

SSI payments are typically issued on the 1st of each month. However, if the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are made on the preceding business day.

SSDI payments are scheduled based on the beneficiary’s birth date:

  • 1st–10th: Second Wednesday of the month.

  • 11th–20th: Third Wednesday.

  • 21st–31st: Fourth Wednesday.

For example, in May 2025, payments are distributed on May 14, 21, and 28, corresponding to the birth date ranges above.

Receiving Your Payment

Most beneficiaries receive their payments via direct deposit, ensuring timely and secure delivery. If you haven’t enrolled in direct deposit, you can do so through your My Social Security account or by contacting the SSA directly.

Stay Informed

While there have been discussions about additional stimulus payments or increased benefits, no new federal programs have been officially announced as of now. Beneficiaries should remain cautious of misinformation and regularly check the SSA’s official website for updates.
