Severe Weather Threat Persists in Middle Tennessee Following Deadly Midwest Storms
Middle Tennessee remains on high alert as severe weather conditions continue to impact the region, following a series of deadly storms that swept through the Midwest. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for potential severe thunderstorms, large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes through the weekend.

Tornado Watches and Storm Threats
A Tornado Watch was in effect for Middle Tennessee counties, including Montgomery, until 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 17. Although the watch has expired, residents are advised to remain vigilant as the threat of severe weather persists. The NWS cautions that the storm system could produce wind gusts exceeding 70 mph and hail up to 3 inches in diameter.
Impact of Recent Storms
The current severe weather in Tennessee follows a significant outbreak that affected parts of the Midwest on May 15–16. The outbreak resulted in at least 14 fatalities in Kentucky, 7 in Missouri, and 2 in Virginia. In St. Louis, Missouri, a powerful tornado caused extensive damage, leading to multiple deaths and widespread power outages.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) had issued a moderate risk alert for severe weather across the Ohio Valley, anticipating conditions conducive to the development of supercell thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes.
Forecast and Preparedness
Looking ahead, the severe weather threat is expected to persist into early next week. The NWS forecasts additional rounds of thunderstorms, with the potential for severe weather on Tuesday, May 20.
Residents in Middle Tennessee should take the following precautions:
-
Stay Informed: Monitor local news outlets, NOAA Weather Radio, or trusted weather apps for the latest updates.
-
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
-
Identify Shelter Areas: Know the safest place in your home to take shelter during a tornado, typically a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor without windows.
-
Charge Devices: Ensure mobile devices are charged in case of power outages.
-
Avoid Travel: Refrain from unnecessary travel during severe weather warnings.
