Details of the Alleged Fraud

Eric Wells, 33, was terminated from his position on September 30, 2024. However, according to the West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD), Wells continued to use the company’s fuel card after his dismissal. The investigation began on October 28, 2024, when the company reported suspicious activity on the card. Initially, the unauthorized charges amounted to around $3,060.88, but further investigation revealed the total loss to be closer to $5,000.

Surveillance footage from a Wawa gas station at 2370 45th Street captured a man matching Wells’ description making two transactions on October 12, 2024, totaling $140.77. The company’s management positively identified Wells in the footage. Bank statements confirmed that the purchases were made using the PIN assigned to Wells.

Legal Consequences

Based on the evidence, Wells was arrested and charged with grand theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and unlawful possession of a stolen credit or debit card. He is currently being held at the Palm Beach County Detention Facility without bond.

This case underscores the importance of promptly deactivating company-issued financial instruments upon an employee’s termination to prevent potential misuse.
