DELRAY BEACH – Even after all these many months, the Democrats have finally admitted that we have a true-blue immigration crisis, and that it was not just a “manufactured crisis” conjured up by the “evil” Trump Administration.
Well, how did we get into this mess in the first place? Many observers have concluded that our “broken” immigration policies came about in 1965 through the passage of the Hart-Celler Act, with the active participation of Ted Kennedy, as the chief spokesman of the Act.
At that time in 1965, Ted Kennedy, a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, assured us that the change in our immigration laws would not be a problem or have an adverse effect on our country. Here’s a quote by Ted Kennedy in the lead up to the passage of the Hart-Celler Act. Ted Kennedy said the following:
“First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same. Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset, contrary to charges in some quarters, the bill will not inundate America with any one country or area, or the most populated and economically deprived nations of Africa and Asia”.
How have those words by Ted Kennedy turned out since then?
We are now being “invaded” by hordes of poor people from all over the globe, mainly from the countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. These mostly illegal immigrants are exploiting a loophole in our immigration law that encourages them to trek over 1,000 miles to reach our southern border. President Trump has tried to stem the flow of “illegals”, but he has been resisted by the Democrats mainly due to politics and not what is good for the country. This resistance can be traced back to the 2016 election when Trump pulled the upset of the century by beating Hillary Clinton for the presidency. The animosity and hatred of Trump has continued unabated since then.
What President Trump has proposed is exactly what the leadership of the Democrats stated just 5 short years ago. In fact, then President Obama, in 2014, said the same things that President Trump has been saying today. It’s scary as to what Obama said then and what Trump says today. I really believe that the Democrat opposition today is rooted in the fact that they don’t want to solve the immigration problem so they can use it against Trump in the 2020 election. They don’t want to give Trump a “win”.
This crisis could be solved in 15 minutes if the Democrats would go along with the Republicans and change our disastrous immigration law now on the books and which is being exploited. If the Democrats loved their country as much as they hate Trump, we could bring sanity back to our southern border.
Until then, and until saner heads prevail, the legacy of Ted Kennedy will be hovering over us until Congress does the right thing and revises our unworkable immigration law.
