UPDATE: JANUARY 20, 2021, 8:40 PM: Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit have arrested and charged Derrick Massey, 21, with Second Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. Throughout the investigation, it was learned that on January 9, 2021, Massey shot into the victim’s vehicle while driving home from the Viva le Mirage club on Winkler Road in Fort Myers. Two victims were shot and transported to a local hospital where one was pronounced deceased. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, along with our Crime Scene Unit, responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. On January 20, 2021, Derrick Massey was taken into custody and booked into the Lee County Jail.
“Our Homicide Unit continues to work non-stop, making arrests and closing cases,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “Our hard-working, dedicated men and women continue to make me proud. Derrick Massey tried to run, but he couldn’t hide.”
FORT MYERS, FL – In the early hours of January 9, 2021, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of 8211 College Parkway, Fort Myers, in reference to a shooting. When Deputies arrived on the scene they found a parked vehicle with two victims inside. Both victims were transported to a local hospital where one victim was pronounced deceased.
The shooting investigation has resulted in the closure of College Parkway from Whiskey Creek Drive to Winkler Road in Fort Myers. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The road will be shut down for a few hours.
Major Crimes Unit detectives are currently on scene conducting an active investigation. This incident is now a confirmed homicide. Due to the nature of the incident, detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Violent Crimes Unit responded to assume the investigation.
