UVALDE, TX – The scourge of school shootings in the United States continued yet again on Tuesday when a lone gunman entered a Uvalde, Texas elementary school with an assault-style rifle and handgun and began firing at anything that moved; in the end, the bloody and horrific rampage left 19 children and two adults dead, along with the shooter himself, who was killed by responding police.

Representing the 27th school shooting in 2022 so far – in addition to the deadliest since Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012, which left 26 dead – local resident Salvador Ramos, 18, armed himself with an AR-15 rifle that he had purchased after his birthday just days before the attack, entered Robb Elementary School at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Once inside, Ramos – who was wearing a tactical vest and carrying a backpack with several ammunition magazines inside – proceeded to barricade himself inside of a fourth-grade classroom and began opening fire on everyone trapped inside, according to Lt. Christopher Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“[Ramos] barricaded himself by locking the door and just started shooting children and teachers that were inside that classroom,” Olivarez said. “It just shows you the complete evil of the shooter.”

Responding police officers broke into the classroom and shot Ramos dead. No motive is currently known for the shooting, although police say that hours before he carried out his heartless slaughter, Ramos had a confrontation with his grandmother over his inability to graduate from high school and shot her, leaving her in critical condition, police say.

Ramos then fled from his grandmother’s home in his truck, which he then crashed in a ditch outside of Robb Elementary; police later recovered a second AR-15 from the vehicle.

While his motive is still being questioned, police say Ramos posted pictures of ammunition magazines and two AR-style rifles he had purchased on social media in the days leading up to the shooting, which may have been warning signs that the demented youth was planning to carry out violent acts.

On the morning of the shooting, Ramos reportedly posted “I’m about to” on social media.

President Joe Biden addressed the massacre, saying that something needs to be done to stop the seemingly non-stop “carnage” in the country’s schools.

“As a nation we have to ask: When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name are we going to do what has to be done?” Biden said. “Why are we willing to live with this carnage?”

However, chances of any overhaul being made to U.S. gun laws are unlikely, as previous attempts to do so have been blocked by Republican members of Congress.
